There are many ways in which Yoga may be defined. It is a scientific method of self-development, a holistic practice for the mind, body and soul, and a science of life.

Yoga originated in India about 5 thousand years ago, and has been practised daily as a spiritual discipline by those seeking a deep understanding of themselves and of the world around them ever since.

A typical Yoga class would include the practice of Yoga postures (Asanas), yogic breathing exercises (pranayama), deep relaxation techniques (Yoga nidra) and sometimes meditation.

However, there are also other aspects of Yoga which can be practiced if desired, such as the following of a yogic diet, chanting (mantra yoga), and the observation of certain personal and social rules which develop awareness and self-discipline. In Yoga, as with anything, the more dedicated you are to your practice, the more you will get out of it.

Listed below are just some of the possible benefits that you could achieve through practising Yoga:

A strong, toned and flexible body
Improved health and well-being, and increased energy levels
Increased feelings of deep peacefulness and happiness
Relief from stress-related disorders, such as headaches, insomnia, depression and anxiety
Reduction in joint pain due to arthritis and rheumatism
